Shelley has been an active member of the community since she moved to Apple Valley, Minnesota with her family in 1991 from Boston. In the 2004 election, Shelley ran as the DFL candidate for the open seat for Minnesota House of Representatives in Legislative District 37A, which covers the southwestern half of Apple Valley and the southeastern corner of Burnsville. She lost by only a few hundred votes.
A tenacious individual, Shelly decided to try again -- and in the 2006 election Shelley Madore won the election to become the first DFLer to win in that area in a very long time! It was a historic win in a district dominated by Republicans for over a generation. Her determination to finally see progress made in transportation, education, and property tax reform won over the voters.
Shelley's Community Background
Shelley has a long and varied background volunteering in leadship positions in the community. For ten years she has been a member of the City of Apple Valley Urban Affairs Committee. This committee oversees the creation, revision, and implementation of city ordinances. It deals with " quality of life" concerns like exotic animal permits, adult entertainment, pawn shop presence and operation, garbage collection, etc.
Shelley's work with the local school district, ISD #196, has been well-publicized:
- Early Childhood and Family Education Advisory Council Member - 3 years
- Community Education Advisory Council Member - 2 years
- Marketing and Promotions Committee Member (Community Education) - 5 years
- Special Education Advisory Council Member (SEAC) - 2 years
For over 3 years, Shelley was a member of the Apple Valley Fourth of July
Parade Committee. The assigned task of this Committee is the development and
implementation of the Apple Valley traditional Independence Day Parade,
including the Kiddie Events and Parade - which have become an important and
much loved part of the annual festivities.
These are just a few of her many local accomplishments.
What Has Shelley Been Up To Since November 4, 2004?
Shelley has continued her relationship with the I35W Solutions Alliance - a multi-city
task group working on funding projects that are priorities for the south
metro. This position currently is a citizen at large and she is working on
getting the final approval to join this group as a representative from the
city of Apple Valley.
In addition, Shelley has maintained her relationship with the Dakota County
Physical Development group and monitored funding issues with county
projects.
Shelley has regularly attended Burnsville City Council meetings,
City of Apple Valley meetings and Rosemount City Council meetings. She maintains her relationship to the city of Apple Valley
through her volunteer position on the Urban Affairs Committee.
She has attended County Commissioners meeting and is working on a project
to address the placement of the voting link off the main website. This
request has given her a position as a citizen representative on the project
team to redesign the website this summer.
Shelley has met with Sue Abderholden of NAMI on the federal setting
identification on Individual Education Plans and discussed the need for the
addition of marriage counseling as a waiver service for families with
chronically ill children. These families currently have a divorce rate as
high as 75 percent and the burden on social services when these families
break up is enormous.
Shelley has attended two State Special Education Advisory Council meetings for
Special Education Directors as a guest. Her purpose is to educate herself on
the demands of No Child Left Behind and its impact on this population.
In addition to this governmental work, Shelley also is a Parent
Network Facilitator for families with special needs children in school
district 196 continues. She is currently working on a speaker night for
families with teen age children diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, which was
held on April 11 at Rosemount Middle School.
Finally, Shelley is active in her senate district (37) and participates in both the SD
meetings and Congressional District 2. She is volunteering for two task groups to better
prepare the district for the 2006 elections .
